WHAT IS A CREDIT UNION?
Credit Unions are for everyone. The aim of a Credit Union is to encourage members to save and to offer them access to loans.*
A credit union is a not for profit organisation owned by its members. Members are linked by a ‘common bond’. Sovereign Credit Union’s common bond covers anyone living or working in Ayrshire, Arran, Dumfries & Galloway. It has a volunteer Board of Directors elected by the members at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
An Annual General Meeting is held each year. All members are invited to attend.
Because the Credit Union is a mutual organisation the members are its owners. They can therefore share in the rewards when a retrospective dividend on their deposits is considered at the AGM.
All business within the credit union is conducted in the strictest confidence and all Board members, staff and volunteers sign a confidentiality agreement.

WHY JOIN SOVEREIGN CREDIT UNION?
We aim to help you take control of your money by enabling you to save what you can, and borrow what you can afford. Credit unions encourage members to save regularly. Withdrawals can be made from your savings, but the benefit of having savings is that they form the basis of eligibility for our loans.
Our accounts are straightforward and easy to understand.
Our rates are clear - they don’t change after application and the interest rate on credit union loans is capped by law.
Becoming a member means becoming part of a community-based mutual organisation which exists for the benefit of its members.
